For over 50 years Diabetes NZ Auckland’s mission has been to improve the lives of those affected by diabetes and to work towards a future without diabetes.
Based in Mt Eden, they make the difference between having to cope with a life of diabetes complications and managing this serious condition well, through education workshops, advice and support groups. Prevention and Awareness programmes are also being taken out to schools and community groups across the region.
Many will have heard about the ‘diabetes epidemic’ but too often little is known of this invisible killer. Diabetes is emerging fast as the biggest health crisis the world has ever seen.
A leading cause of death, poorly managed diabetes is the major cause of heart attacks and strokes, kidney failure and blindness. It is the largest contributor to foot and leg amputations and causes impotence.
In New Zealand 19 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day and the incidence of diabetes across all ethnic groups is forecast to double over the next 15 years to 500,000 with most new cases coming in Type 2 diabetes.
By continuing to take care of themselves every day, people with diabetes can prevent or delay the long-term damage that can be caused by persistent high blood glucose.
Through learning about one’s own condition, people can empower themselves to make the lifestyle decisions that go such a long way to avoiding the heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure and amputations that can follow in diabetes’ wake.
