Arthur's Pass Regional Information

The settlement of Arthur's Pass is situated on a Pass of the same name, which was forged as a route from Christchurch to the West Coast during the gold rush of the 1860's. Prior to this, Maori had used the path to cross the Southern Alps to reach the West Coast region, an area rich in the precious resource of greenstone, or pounamu.

The Southern Alps demarcate the West Coast and Canterbury regions, with the pass lying between the Otira River valley and the Bealey River. Situated at an altitude of 924 metres, the township is the highest of any in New Zealand, and provides a base for travelers walking, climbing and skiing in the region.

The Pass falls within a protected natural area, the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of snowcapped mountains, a number of which rise over 2,000 metres. There are day-long walks in the park, as well as longer tracks on which there are huts and camping areas.
