Upper Hutt is located 30 kilometres from Wellington City in the northern Hutt Valley. Encompassing the urban centre and less populated areas beyond the upper Hutt Valley, the Upper Hutt's boundaries lie at Silverstream in the south and and at the top of the Rimutaka Hill in the north.
Initially inhabited by Maori, the area was known as Orongomai and was the site of European settlement in 1841, when development occurred at Trentham. The building of the railway during the 1870's reached the Upper Hutt area in 1876, continuing to the far north of the valley and over the Rimutaka Ranges to the Wairarapa region by 1878.
With easy access to bush-clad hills and park areas, such as the Rimutaka Forest Park, the Upper Hutt area is ideally suited to lovers of the outdoors. Locals and visitors alike enjoy walks through native forest, trout fishing in the Hutt River, tramping and mountain biking.
Another way to experience the outdoors in the Upper Hutt region is at the Staglands Wildlife Reserve, in the Akatarawa Valley. On the ten hectare reserve, walkways wind through native bush, surrounded by the sound of water and the calls of many species of native and exotic bird. Staglands has been involved in the conservation of endangered native species, such as the rare Blue Duck.
