The Kapiti Coast is 30 kilometres in length, stretching from Paekakariki to Otaki on the west of the North Island.
Paraparamumu is the main centre on the coastline and is the departure point for trips to Kapiti Island, from which the Coast takes its name. The area is a popular summer destination for Wellingtonians due to its warm climate, laidback atmosphere and close proximity to Wellington City.
Kapiti Island is a protected reserve situated five kilometres offshore from the mainland. It is home to many species of bird which are rare or extinct on New Zealand's mainland. As a sanctuary for bird and marine life, access is limited to fifty people daily. Once there, visitors enjoy viewing wildlife such as the little spotted kiwi and the short-tailed bat, and getting on the water to kayak, explore the reserve by boat or take a dive in the waters around the island. A guided tour is available, on which you will learn more about the island, its history and the role it plays in Maori culture.
For water lovers, the Coast's beaches are a relaxing summer escape for swimming and water sports, while golf enthusiasts can play a round at the internationally acclaimed Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, which has been host to the New Zealand Open.
Family entertainment can be found at the Lindale Centre and farm park, where children can interact with farmyard and domestic animals, and view farm activities such as the milking of cows and the shearing of sheep. The centre also features a number of boutique stores selling specialty food products for which the region is known, including cheese, olives, honey and ice cream. Another of the Coast's attractions is the Southward Car Museum, which houses a large collection of rare and antique vehicles.
