Masterton is the Wairarapa region's main centre and operates as a rural service centre for the surrounding farming region. It is located 85 kilometres from Wellington and has a population of just over 22,000.
Sheep grazing and wool production were vital in Masterton's early economy and carry through to the present day in the form of the annual Golden Shears competition. Held each year in the first week of March, the competition finds the world's best shearer and wool handler in junior, senior and open categories.
For a taste of local culture and art, the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History offers a relatively small but interesting collection of art works and historic objects. There is also a varied and changing programme of contemporary art exhibits featuring the work of local artists.
Visitors can take a day to relax at Queen Elizabeth Park, where children can find much to entertain. There is a miniature train to ride, paddle boats to hire and ducks to be fed on the park's lake. Another attraction for the family is the Wairarapa International Balloon Fiesta, held annually in March. Hot air balloons and their pilots are drawn from around the world to fly in competition for five days, against the spectacular backdrop of the Tararua Ranges.
