Historically, the area has been inhabited by European settlers since the 1840's, but Maori occupation of the Wairarapa Coast has been shown archaeologically to date back at least 800 years. In Masterton, the region's history and culture is on display at the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, which exhibits the work of local and national artists of both Maori and Pakeha origin.
