Wairarapa Regional Information

At the south-east corner of the North Island, at the foot of the Tararua Range, the Wairarapa region is a popular destination for lovers of fine wine and food. The district is known internationally for its award winning Pinot Noir wines. The town of Martinborough is home to a unique wine village with over 30 boutique vineyards, most within walking distance of the town square.

Historically, the area has been inhabited by European settlers since the 1840's, but Maori occupation of the Wairarapa Coast has been shown archaeologically to date back at least 800 years. In Masterton, the region's history and culture is on display at the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, which exhibits the work of local and national artists of both Maori and Pakeha origin.
