Raglan

Raglan Regional Information

Raglan is a small community, situated 48 kilometres west of Hamilton. The township's namesake, Lord Raglan, was the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the Crimean War. Originally known as Whaingaroa, the town was renamed in honour of Lord Raglan in 1855. The sheltered harbour at Raglan provides excellent conditions for kayaking, swimming and boating. The harbour runs 12 kilometres inland from its entrance, with the town of Raglan on its southern arm.

Raglan is a popular surfing destination, attracting visitors from around the world and proving popular as a venue for surfing competitions. For recreational surfers, surf gear is available for hire from businesses in the region, along with surf lessons if required. Famous surfing spots are Rangipu Beach, a windsurfing and kitesurfing beach; the Ngarunui Heads, a black sand surf beach that is protected by lifeguards; and Manu Bay, a rocky surf beach famed for its left hand surf break.

As well as drawing surfers to the area, Raglan is a magnet for those seeking a laidback lifestyle. This relaxed atmosphere has brought many producers of arts and crafts to Raglan. From October to April, the town is abuzz with activity and summer visitors enjoying the outdoors in the region. Once in Raglan, many find it hard to leave this idyllic township.

Part of Raglan's appeal lies in its scenic beauty, which is easily accessed through sightseeing tours in the area. Driving south from Raglan on unsealed back roads, you will find yourself on a slow and winding road, yet the beautiful views and off-the-beaten-track feeling make this an enjoyable one and a half hour drive to Kawhia. Along the way is Mount Karioi, whose summit can be reached on foot in three and a half hours, providing views from a height of 755 metres. Further inland, the Bridal Veil Falls are spectacular, falling 55 metres to a pool surrounded by native bush.
