The small town of Cambridge is situated 24 kilometres southeast of Hamilton and is the main urban centre in the Waipa District.
The township's English charm echoes the origins of its name; visiting Cambridge, you will find cherished old trees, quaint churches and a village green. Adding to the atmosphere of the town, its streets are lined with broad, shady trees, which are most vibrant in the Autumn months. Driving into Cambridge during this time, you will be greeted with a blaze of Autumnal colours.
The town was founded as a military base, but is well known today for its track record in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses for racing and showjumping. Thoroughbred stud farms, such as the Cambridge Thoroughbred Lodge introduce visitors to the world of horse breeding and offer an impressive horse extravaganza. Stud tours are also available, on which a bloodstock expert will take visitors to a number of local stud farms. The Cambridge Raceway is another favourite for visitors to the town, hosting trotting and greyhound races three times a month. An equine stars walk of fame is located on the pavements in the centre of the town. Charisma is perhaps the most famous horse to come out of Cambridge, having won the Olympic three day event in both 1984 and 1988.
Lake Karapiro, part of a network of eight hydroelectric power stations, is just a short 8 kilometre drive from Cambridge. The lake offers a worldclass water sports venue, where visitors enjoy water sports such as kayaking, rowing, water skiing and yachting. World and Olympic rowing champions Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell are just two of the worldclass athletes who call Cambridge home. Others include gold medal winning cyclist Sarah Ulmer and champion equestrian Mark Todd.
For an introduction to the history of the town, walk the Heritage Trail, a one and a half hour trail which will introduce you to historical buildings and fortifications, including St Andrew's Anglican Church at the entranceway to the town centre. The Cambridge Museum houses other remnants of the town's past, including relics from pioneering days and a model of the Te Totara Pa, which was destroyed by northern Maori.
Wandering through the town's streets, you will come across a number of antique shops, for which Cambridge is famous, as well as art galleries and craft shops. Enjoy a pitstop at one of the town's cafes or dine in a quality restaurant.
