The United States of America (commonly known as the United States, the U.S., USA or simply America) is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, with no official language at federal level. English however, is spoken most commonly amongst US citizens.

The United States is the world's oldest surviving federation, a constitutional republic which is fundamentally structured as a representative democracy.

Independent from Britain since 1776, the USA has developed a strong culture of its own and is recognised worldwide as the centre of wealth and power. Covering 9,826,630 square kilometres of land, the US is home to 305,954,000 million people (2009 estimate).
