About UK

The UK, or United Kingtom, consists of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is also known as Britain, and is a sovereign state in Europe. A small island spanning 244,820 square kilometres, the UK has a dense population of 60,975,000 (2007 estimate).

The UK was the world's foremost power during the 19th and 20th centuries, however the economic toll of two world wars and the decline of the empire in the last decades of the 20th century has seen its role in global affairs pulled back significantly.
