Lawrence

Lawrence Regional Information

Lawrence is a small yet significant town in Otago, located on the Central Otago Highway south of Dunedin. During the 1860's gold rush, Lawrence was the hub of gold mining activity, providing easy access to Gabriel's Gully, the first site in New Zealand at which gold was discovered.

Indications of the town's heritage still remain today, including buildings dating from the time of the gold rush and evidence of the large Chinese community who sought their fortune there during this time. At the Tuapeka Goldfields Museum, you can learn more about the gold mining heritage of the region and the lives of those who lived in the town. There are also fifty buildings in Lawrence which have been classified as historic places, allowing the town to retain its historical character.

Today, visitors have the opportunity to hunt in the mountains around Lawrence and fish in the Tuapeka River. There are also a number of walks providing access to heritage sites and the chance to experience the scenic beauty of the region.
