The earliest Maori settlement in New Zealand has been dated around 1100AD and was concentrated along the southeast coast of the South Island, around the site of present day Dunedin. The first European settlers were goldminers, whalers and early Scottish settlers who came to the region over 150 years ago.
Dunedin's history still speaks through its architecture, a mix of Victorian and Edwardian heritage buildings that have been well preserved. The city even boasts New Zealand's only castle, Larnach Castle, which was built in the 1870's and features ornate interior carving, stonework, woodcarving, plasterwork and glass design. Other landmarks include the Flemish Renaissance-style Dunedin Railway Station, the University clock-tower building and the Gothic Revival Dominican Priory. The city is also home to New Zealand's oldest university, the University of Otago, which gives Dunedin the energy and flavour of a student city. As the country's fifth largest city, Dunedin has a population of 120,000, 20% of which is made up of students.
As a university town, Dunedin has an energetic youth culture that enjoys the cafe and restaurant scene, as well as the many bars, clubs and taverns in the city. Those who enjoy the lighter side of life can take a guided tour of the Speights Brewery or the Cadbury World chocolate factory. The energy of the city has also led to a burgeoning boutique fashion industry and a strong arts community.
Sports fans are also drawn to the city for rugby games and cricket matches at Carisbrook, or soccer and athletics events at Logan Park. There are many golf courses and parks within reach of the city, as well as Saint Clair Beach, a popular site for surfers.
Located in close proximity to Dunedin city is Otago Peninsula, an area known for its wildlife. Tairoa Head is the site of the world's only mainland albatross breeding colony. Many other creatures are also found in the region, including ocean birds, seals, the Blue Penguin and the extremely rare Yellow Eyed Penguin.
Dunedin is the gateway to the hinterland, which is accessible via the Taieri Gorge Railway. The rail journey provides views of Port Chalmers and the Pacific Ocean coastline, as well as offering access to the Otago Central Rail Trail, a public track catering for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. The 150km trail follows the former Otago Central Branch railway line from Middlemarch to Clyde.
