The Nelson Lakes region incorporates the Nelson Lakes National Park, a forested and mountainous area with featuring two glacial lakes, Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti.
The lakes are fringed by beech trees and bush walkways, both short and long. These beech forest areas are filled with the sound of birdsong and are the site of the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Programme, which is committed to the restoration of native kaka, kakariki, bush robin, giant snail, lizard and bat populations.
At the lakes, watersports are the obvious favourite, complementing the various lakeside walks and mountain tramping routes. In particular, the lakes are known for outstanding Brown Trout fishing and boating. The annual Seresin Estate Antique and Classic Boat Show attracts those who are interested in classic boating to Lake Rotoiti. Skiing and snowboarding is offered during the winter months, at the Rainbow Ski Area, set above Lake Rotoiti.
