Motueka

Motueka Regional Information

The township of Motueka is the last settlement before entering the Abel Tasman National Park. It is situated close to the Motueka River, renowned for brown trout fishing, on the western shore of Tasman Bay. The Motueka township has a population of around 6,000 and is located within the region of the same name.

In the surrounding area, horticultural and viticultural plantings thrive in the warm conditions. Market gardens, orchards and vineyards attract seasonal workers in the summertime. Specialist crops such as olives, grapes, hops and fruits are grown in the region. All of New Zealand's hops, used in the production of beer, are grown in the Motueka area. A tour of the region's wineries can be made from Motueka; many vineyards are open to the public for wine tastings and a number offer delicious cafe or restaurant fare.

Motueka is just a short distance from the popular beach resort of Kaiteriteri; Marahau, the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park; and the wilderness of the Kahurangi National Park. Many trampers and kayakers make Motueka their base before entering the National Parks.

Like other towns within the Nelson region, Motueka is home to a significant community of artists and craftspeople, whose work can be viewed in local galleries and in the artists' studios. Their work is inspired by the dramatic coastal and forest scenery, and the wide variety of wildlife in the region.
