Picton

Picton Regional Information

Picton is situated at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound, between the mountains and the sea at the tip of the South Island.

Picton is the main commercial port in the Marlborough region, also incorporating marina facilities and welcoming visiting cruise ships. It is also the departure and arrival point for the Interislander, the passenger and cargo ferry line connecting the North and South Islands. Cruises and chartered vessels also depart from Picton to explore the Queen Charlotte Sound.

There are a number of waterfront cafes at this seaside township, serving award winning wines and local delicacies, particularly seafood specialties. Take the chance to explore the buildings along the waterfront, which date from the time of European settlement in the 1840's. Another morsel of history is preserved at the Edwin Fox Maritime Centre where the Edwin Fox, one of the oldest ships in the world, has been restored. The ship was used to transport convicts to Australia and is now able to be viewed by visitors, along with a collection of relics found onboard the vessel.
