Marlborough Sounds Regional Information
The Marlborough Sounds are a maze of bays, coves, waterways and islands, which comprise three areas of water: the Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds at the top of the South Island.
The system of drowned valleys was formed by mountains sinking and seas flooding the area's valleys many millions of years ago. According to Maori myth, the Sounds were formed when Kupe fought with a giant octopus, digging out the waterways and inlets with his fingers as he reached out to the South Island for support. Today, the area is a scenic wonderland, an unspoilt wilderness characterised by native forest and bushland dropping to isolated beaches and bright blue waters. Many come to enjoy diving, boating and kayaking in the waters of the Sounds.
The Queen Charlotte Track is extremely popular with trampers and mountain bikers, featuring stunning coastal scenery, lush forest and views of the Queen Charlotte and Keneperu Sounds. The track's 71 kilometre length stretches from Ship Cove to Anakiwa, and is suitable for people or all ages with an average level of fitness. Walking the full length of the track takes between three and four days.
The best way to travel within the Marlborough Sounds region is by boat, although much of the area is also accessible by car. Water taxis and boats operate in the region, providing an easy and quick means of transport. Cruises are available, exploring historical sites such as Ship Cove, which was visited by Captain James Cook as he mapped New Zealand, and Motuara Island, a native bird sanctuary. Along the way, the cruise offers the chance to see penguins, dolphins and seals. Alternatively, ferry yourself around the Sounds' waterways, by kayak, sailboat or motor boat.
