Palmerston North Regional Information
The university city of Palmerston North is one of the country's largest provincial centres, with a population of just over 78,000. Located in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, the city is situated on the banks of the Manawatu River, set against the backdrop of the Tararua Mountain Range. The city's official parameters encompass the rural areas to the south and northeast of the city, where fertile soils provide the means for a livelihood in pastoral farming, forestry or horticulture.
Rich soil and a temperate climate has also resulted in many thriving gardens in the city and surrounding area. Visitors enjoy Victoria Esplanade in the city, covering an area of 19 hectares and featuring an abundance of trees, rose gardens, flower beds, indoor gardens and bush tracks. The historical Pukemarama Garden was designed in the 19th century in a formal English style, with its homestead, perennial gardens, roses and sunken garden making it a popular attraction.
On the nearby Tararua and Ruahine Ranges, the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere provides electricity to 30,000 homes. Its 158 turbines can be seen by clydesdale wagon, on horseback, by four-wheel drive or on a guided hike.
For sports fans, the New Zealand Rugby Museum is a highlight of the city. Through pictures, memorabilia and videos, this large collection tells the history of rugby in New Zealand from the first game in 1870 to the present day.
Sometimes referred to as 'Knowledge City', Palmerston North has an active student culture due to the number of academic institutions with campuses in the city. The largest of these, Massey University, offers a wide range of courses and carries out research in many fields. Also providing tertiary education options are the Universal College of Learning (UCOL), a regional polytechnic, and the International Pacific College (IPC), an institution that focuses on providing a supportive learning environment for international students.
