Feilding Regional Information

To the west of Wanganui are a number of small townships, including Feilding, whose population is just over 12,000.

This attractive town supports the surrounding farming district. The fertile lands around Feilding make it a thriving agricultural area, although the area is susceptible to major flooding. The town was named in honour of Colonel William Feilding, who was involved in the settlement of the area in the 1870's.

Much of Feilding's charm lies in its feeling of history. Without traffic lights or parking meters, the town retains a quaint historical charm. During recent years, there has been a rejuvenation of the town through the restoration of historical buildings in the late Victorian and Edwardian style.

The town successfully combines new commercial buildings with these preserved historical buildings. In the city centre, shoppers can wander the stores and stop for a bite to eat at a local cafe or restaurant. Urban living is also combined with rural life in Feilding, when the twice weekly cattle and sheep sales take place, just 100 metres from the shopping centre. These stock sales are said to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Feilding is well known for the beauty of its parks and gardens, both private and public. The rhododendron gardens in the Kimbolton area attract thousands of visitors annually. Many heritage homes in the town feature beautiful gardens which are open to the public.
