Just five kilometres from Hastings, Havelock North is situated on the Heretaunga Plains at the base of Te Mata Peak. Named in honour of Sir Henry Havelock, a British General who fought in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the township has a vibrant village atmosphere.
Havelock North is a combination of old English style and rural New Zealand, reflected in the township's beautiful parks and gardens. Historic Duart House is an exquisitely restored estate with well-maintained gardens which are open to the public. Keirunga Gardens offer an art gallery and gardens, which are used by the community and open to the public.
Many visitors climb the imposing Te Mata Peak, 16 kilometres from Havelock North. Its sheer cliffs rise to nearly 400 metres and, from its peak, there are spectacular views of the Heretaunga Plains, the Hawke's Bay, Mt Ruapehu and the Ruahine Ranges. The Peak is easily accessible and offers well graded walking tracks for all levels of fitness.
In recent years, Havelock North has grown significantly and now has a vibrant cafe and art scene. On a warm Saturday morning, you can visit the Village Growers' Market to purchase fresh produce and enjoy a bite to eat at a local cafe. From there, you can view the work of local artists at a number of galleries and studios.
