Te Anau

Te Anau Regional Information

The lakeside township of Te Anau is an ideal base for the exploration of the spectacular Fiordland National Park. Located at the southwestern corner of the South Island, the Fiordland region has earned a reputation for its dramatic landforms, scenic beauty, inspiring walks and pristine natural environment. Te Anau lies 170 kilometres from Queenstown and 120 kilometres from Milford Sound.

The waters of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island, are deep and calm. Mount Luxmore and the Murchison mountains provide a backdrop to this serene setting. On the lake, scenic cruises and fishing trips are offered, while those looking for the thrill of a jet boat ride can experience it on the Waiau and Wairarahiri Rivers. Other activities in the area include quad bike tours, horse treks and walks, all with views of the lake and mountain surrounds.

The Te Anau glow worm caves are full of waterfalls, whirlpools and rapids. The journey to see these unique caves begins with a 35 minute boat trip across Lake Te Anau and culminates with a tour of the cave and the glow worm grotto. The Te Anau Wildlife Centre is another means of viewing the area's creatures. There, visitors can learn about the native birds whose habitats range from mountain environs to forest and seashore homes. Birds at the centre include the extremely rare takahe, as well as native weka, parakeets, tui, kaka and pigeons.

As a base for journeys into the surrounding region, Te Anau tour operators offer regular guided tours to the fiords and other areas within the Fiordland National Park. Scenic flights offer a different view of the fascinating and remote Fiordland area, by fixed wing, floatplane or helicopter.
