Central Plateau Other Towns Regional Information
The surrounding towns of Taupo in the Central Plateau of New Zealand all boast underlying rocks and soils of volcanic origin. With widespread stretches of untouched land meeting snowy mountains, there are several Central Plateau towns worth a visit; including Ohakune, Raetihi and Horopito.
The region's inhabitants live close to the lake's shores and make their living through tourism, including snow sports in the winter months, and forestry. To visitors and locals, the lake and its tributaries offer year-round fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout, which were released in Lake Taupo more than 100 years ago.
