Methven

Methven Regional Information

Methven is a small town in the west of the Canterbury Plains, 35 kilometres north of Ashburton. Throughout the year, Methven is a rural service centre, but in winter the town bustles with the arrival of ski and snowboard enthusiasts. Nestled at the base of Mount Hutt, Methven is the closest town to the Mount Hutt ski area, which offers access to a wide variety of trails for both experienced and novice skiers. Mount Hutt has the longest ski season of any ski field in New Zealand, opening for five months of every year from June until October.

Surrounded by the fields of the Canterbury Plains, hot air ballooning in Methven provides an ideal means by which to view the chequerboard effect of the plains and the magnificent mountains in the region. Alternatively, to make the most of Methven's fresh air, visitors can go fishing, play a round of golf, hike in the mountains or take a mountain bike for a spin. The breath-taking scenery and wide open spaces make Methven an excellent location for many outdoor activities.

The Walking and Adventure Festival is held each year in April, celebrating the walking tracks and activities on offer in Methven. The festival includes forest and bird walks, wine and food trails, jet boating trips, historic walks and horse treks.
