Christchurch Regional Information

The city of Christchurch retains the air of an English town, a feeling which has its roots in the early days of the city's settlement, when settlers attempted to create Christchurch in the likeness of cities in their homeland of England. Christchurch is the largest centre in the South Island.

From the city, you can walk over the Bridle Path track to the port town of Lyttelton, following the path walked by the first settlers who crossed the Port Hills from Lyttelton to the settlement of Christchurch.

At the hub of the central city is Cathedral Square, the site of Christchurch Cathedral, an impressive example of Gothic Revival architecture, a 19th century style which revived the original Gothic style of the Middle Ages. To get an excellent view of the city, you can climb to the top of its spire. Further examples of historic buildings can be seen throughout the central city. The Arts Centre is also built in the Gothic Revival style and is now a buzzing arts, shopping and entertainment venue. Walking on from the Arts Centre, the impressive facade of the Canterbury Museum can be seen, built in the same Victorian architectural style. Here visitors can explore Christchurch's rich cultural and natural heritage.

Staying true to its moniker The Garden City, Christchurch is filled with public and private parks and gardens, the most notable of which is Hagley Park. At 161 hectares, the park has great presence in the central city and is a focal point for community, sporting and cultural events. The park has been at the heart of Christchurch since the 1850's and also incorporates 30 hectares of Botanic Gardens, displaying one of the best collections of exotic and native plants in New Zealand.

Complementing its colourful gardens, Christchurch's vibrant cultural environment offers a wide variety of events in every season. Significant events include the Festival of Romance, the International Buskers Festival, the Winter carnival, the Summertimes Festival and for the little ones, KidsFest.
