The picturesque township of Akaroa is situated on the edge of volcanic harbour on Banks Peninsula, offering spectacular views of the Akaroa Harbour.
The harbour was formed by the violent eruptions of three ancient volcanoes. Considered by many to be one of Canterbury's oldest settlements, Akaroa was the sole attempt at settlement by the French in New Zealand. Settlers of British descent soon outnumbered the French, yet the town continues to celebrate its unique heritage and French origins. Many of Akaroa's streets retain French names and descendents of the early French settlers still call Akaroa home. The annual Akaroa Frenchfest is a popular celebration of all things French, beginning with a re-enactment of the French landing on the foreshore. Following this, there is a parade through the town and a range of entertainment, including music, cuisine and wine, all with a French flavour.
The historic architecture of the town has also been well preserved, with old cottages, churches and public buildings providing excellent examples of New Zealand's early colonial architectural style. The Akaroa Museum collection is housed in several historic buildings: the old courthouse, the Custom House and one of New Zealand's oldest homes, Lanlois-Eteveneaux. A further taste of history can be found in the Maori and Colonial Museum, which features Maori and pioneer artefacts.
Far from living in the past, though, Akaroa is a bustling town with much to entice visitors. A wander along the foreshore will take you to charming cafes, restaurants, galleries and boutique stores. Walks further afield offer stunning ocean vistas, while boating on the harbour itself provides the opportunity to view dolphins, seabirds, seals and penguins.
