Warkworth Regional Information

Warkworth is a charming historical village in the bush-clad setting of the Mahurangi River. It provides a base for those wanting to explore walkways in the Wenderholm, Mahurangi West and Tawharanui regional parks. Driving through the area surrounding Warkworth, you will discover picturesque and quaint coastal towns where you can stop for a bite to eat at a local cafe, view the creative flair of the area's crafts people and sample the fare of local wineries.

Visitors to Warkworth can also explore Kawau Island, which is just a short ferry ride from Sandspit. This island is a popular holiday location, covered in both native bush and exotic forest plantations. After its purchase from the Maori in 1837, mining operations were established on the island and continued until Sir George Grey, Governor of New Zealand, purchased the land and developed it into a botanical and zoological reserve. Today, you can go to the elegant Mansion House, which was once the Governor's home and is now open to the public as a museum. From the house, there are walking tracks which take walkers through native forest to beaches and historical sites.
