Waitakere Regional Information
Waitakere City is a fast growing urban area to the west of Auckland City, incorporating Auckland's western districts. It is the most recently formed city within the Greater Auckland region and is currently New Zealand's fifth largest city.
The Waitakere Ranges Regional Park provides the location for a great escape, with more than 250 kilometres of walking tracks and tramping routes taking visitors through native forest and along the coastline. To the west of the Ranges are several popular surf beaches, including Karekare, Whatipu, Piha and Bethells beaches. Although these beaches draw many visitors, there are dangers for both surfers and swimmers, so care must be taken.
Waitakere City has also attracted a significant number of artists and crafts people, whose studios are often open to the public. Many artists draw inspiration from the magnificent Waitakere Ranges and the rugged western coastline. The area has a community of professional painters, photographers, sculptors, writers and musicians.
