Matakana Regional Information
Matakana is a township in the north of the Greater Auckland region, quickly establishing a reputation for its boutique vineyards, a number of which also offer quality cuisine. Grapes grown in the region are predominantly Bordeaux varieties, for red wines, but Chardonnay and Pinot Gris varieties are also planted.
The fertility of the region's soil is also put to good use in the planting of fruits and vegetables. Journeying to Matakana and neighbouring Warkworth makes a pleasant day trip from the city for Aucklanders. Along the way, visitors can purchase locally grown seasonal produce, which is often sold at the farmer's gate or at the Matakana Village Farmers' Market, held each Saturday. There, around 30 local growers and food producers sell fresh fruit and organic vegetables, along with other goodies such as organic chocolate, eggs, chutneys and preserves, honey and flowers.
