July is here and that means we've hit the middle of winter. Limited daylight means outdoor activities are often unappealing in favour of a hot cuppa and a night of good TV. The good thing about the middle of winter? We've reached the coldest, darkest point and things are looking up - and it won't be too long before the sun's warmth is beating down on us and we're enjoying another great Kiwi summer.

Don't let the cold weather keep you from staying fit, and get a head start on beach season this year by joining a fitness centre and beating those winter blues with a fun group fitness class. They are a great way to tone your body and get your mind out of the slump caused by grey days.

NZS.com launches new Jobs section

How would you like a new job to brighten up the season?

It is 2008, and job hunting online is fast, easy and to the point these days. Many companies are moving away from the bi-weekly newspaper job offering and snail mail CV posting in favour of a quick, efficient online alternative. Today, you can literally apply for a job online on a Monday, be interviewed the next day and have a new contract signed by the end of the week.

Because time is money, the internet is the perfect avenue for a quick recruitment process, so with thousands of opportunities around the country for a change in job in New Zealand, what are you waiting for?

We've just launched a brand spanking new jobs section on NZS.com, giving you the ability to search for New Zealand Jobs online in a quick, simple and unfussy format, in partnership with JobX. The NZS.com jobs section aims to give you the information you want as fast and efficiently as possible.

Using job listings websites can be daunting when there are so many variables. Many sites need more than five different fields filled in just to get you basic results, which you still have to filter through in hopes of finding something appropriate.

The NZS.com Jobs section uniquely divides all jobs by suburb, so you can search your area first with one click, then sort down to find job titles within an industry of choice. Great if you're looking for a complete career change and want to easily browse everything within a specific area!

Alternatively, you can simply enter a job keyword followed by an area and instantly find job listings within your locale for you to choose from.

Sticking around in Search Engines

At NZS.com, we are big fans of blogging for your business. A blog can benefit your company or cause in many ways - they give you a platform to keep your audience regularly updated with news and tips, and create a two-way conversation community, bringing you closer to your target market. There is however, one flaw to blogging specifically to create a search engine presence, it is very difficult to create long lasting results.

So let's look at the flip side of blogging, in favour of providing more substantial, 'permanent' content for your site.

Blog posts usually only stick around in search results for a matter of days before they are seemingly gone forever - comparable to yesterday's newspaper being used to line the kitty litter box today. As strategic blogging is often about timeliness, it is quickly replaced when the 'news' is treated as 'olds'.

How can you publish content on your website, which will continue to rank well? If you create richer content which is more permanent and less date-dependent, and gives a more thorough detailing of what a searcher is looking for, it is more likely to get a long standing rank. Information that is unique and unlikely to change is looked on favourably in the World Wide Web.

If you want to continue to use a blogging format for SEO purposes, consider getting some respected sites to link to your New Zealand blog. The power of anchor text within a link to your post (on a site with a high Pagerank) is quite likely to increase the search engine longevity of that post. For example, if you write a blog post on a threat to Red Panda extinction, having an authoritative site such as WWF or Greenpeace link to your post with the anchor text "Red Panda Extinction Threat" will bode very well for your post's search rank staying power for those keywords.

iPhone in New Zealand

Is your recycling bin ready for your existing cell phone, handheld computer, PDA, GPS system and MP3 player? The Apple iPhone 3G will officially go on sale at electronics retailers next Friday. Just three weeks ago it was announced that the refurbished 3G device would be made available to consumers in New Zealand, Australia, Italy and Portugal on the 11th of July. In New Zealand the iPhone is being launched on the Vodafone network.

The New Zealand launch of the iPhone has been on the mind of Kiwi technophiles and style gurus since its launch in the US in late June of 2007, with news pieces and blog posts all over the country wondering when it would hit our stores (and which telecommunications company would supply it). Months went by, and the iPhone never hit. Every so often speculation entered news stories that one carrier or another had gained the rights to the phone, but still, it was never released. Subsequently, this caused many units to be imported from the US and sold via online auction that had been unlocked and could be used in New Zealand.

Steve Jobs' Apple conference on June 9 revealed that the first generation iPhone would never be made available to retailers in New Zealand, and we would receive the second generation 3G-network enabled phone in its place. The new iPhone 3G is slightly redesigned on the outside, with an overhaul on the inside making the device twice as fast as the first generation model. The new iPhone has all of the features of the original, from phone calls to Wi-Fi - and now includes a GPS mapping solution and access to the Apps Store, which has unique and innovative programs available for download.

Vodafone have been careful not to announce any pricing of the iPhone 3G for the New Zealand market yet, however the iPhone 3G is being shown for sale on Apple's US site starting at $199 USD. The first generation model was originally launched in the US at $599, and was dropped to $399 just 3 months later. Presumably, we have to wait for the actual release of the iPhone 3G at the end of next week to find out the final RRP for New Zealand. Current smart phone competitors which have similar features to the iPhone range from approximately $700-900 in New Zealand, so how competitively will Vodafone price New Zealand's most anticipated cell phone to date?
