General West Coast Weather Information
Stretching along the exposed western coast of the South Island, to the west of the magnificent Southern Alps, West Coast weather is well known for its heavy and frequent rainfall. The region covers 600 kilometres, from Westport in the north to Punakaiki, Greymouth, Hokitika, Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, and Haast in the south. With high rainfall throughout the year, this part of New Zealand gives you the chance to experience unspoilt, lush rainforest, along with some of the most impressive glaciers in the world and unique rock formations at Punakaiki.
Greymouth is the West Coast's main centre, situated at the mouth of the Grey River and offering an ideal base for exploration of the region's natural attractions. From Greymouth, adventure enthusiasts can enjoy daytrips for cave rafting, whitewater rafting and sea kayaking. Greymouth weather combines sun, rain and mild temperatures.
Hokitika, like Greymouth, is based at a river mouth - this time the Hokitika River. This town was once the heart of the region's gold mining boom. Today, this heritage can be explored at the West Coast Historical Museum and the Gibson Quay area, where part of the original wharf is reconstructed. Jade, a natural treasure of the West Coast, is also present in Hokitika; visit jade carvers at their studios or view their creations in the town's galleries. Hokitika weather brings high rainfall year round and warm, humid summers.
Reefton is a vibrant community with a population of 1,000, offering an insight into the prosperous gold mining days of the nineteenth century. With the search for gold came technology; it may be hard to believe, but this humble town was the first place in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public supply of electricity. Due to its inland location, Reefton weather differs from typical West Coast weather, experiencing hot, dry summers and frosty winters.
Westport is also a riverside town, set at the mouth of the Buller River and once the base for the region's coal mining industry. From here, you can explore old coal towns or walk through a simulated min at the Coaltown Museum. Westport weather is generally sunny and mild, with high rainfall.
