General Wellington Weather Information

The Wellington region covers the lower western corner of the North Island, from Wellington City in the south, up through the Tararua Ranges to the north and along the string of townships on the Kapiti Coast. North of windy Wellington City, the sandy beaches of Paekakariki, Raumati, Paraparaumu, Paraparaumu Beach, Waikanae and Otaki are popular summertime spots. Wellington weather is generally mild, with moderate rainfall and strong winds.

Paraparaumu is the Kapiti Coast's largest town and a popular escape for Wellingtonians. Less wild weather-wise, Paraparaumu weather is warmer than Wellington as the area is sheltered from westerly winds by Kapiti Island, a nature reserve and bird sanctuary that protects some of the world's most endangered species. Paraparaumu Beach is ideal for walking, jogging and swimming.

Wellington City has a reputation for windy, unsettled weather, so take shelter from the wind for an afternoon at Te Papa, our national museum. There you'll find art, heritage displays and Maori treasures. Despite windy Wellington City weather, the capital is an ideal city to explore on foot; it's well known for its shops, markets and cafe culture. Warm days are also ideal for a stroll along the seaside or a trip to the Botanic Gardens, offering spectacular views of Wellington Harbour. Of course, you can also visit the Beehive and the renovated Parliament Buildings in the historic suburb of Thorndon.
