Like the rest of the Northland region, Dargaville has a subtropical climate with warm summers and very mild winters. Situated at the junction of the Wairoa and Kaihu Rivers, southwest of Whangarei, Dargaville is the main centre on Northland's Kauri Coast and was once an important river port for the export of kauri timber and gum. A subtropical climate brings an average temperature of 16 to 25°C in summer months and 15 to 17°C in winter.
