General Northland Weather Information

With stunning beaches and dense native forest, the Northland region is also a historical centre for our nation, as the site of our first capital city and the place where our founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed between Maori and Pakeha in 1840. This subtropical paradise is a great holiday destination and offers virtually unspoiled outdoor spaces for recreation or sheer enjoyment of New Zealand wilderness. Northland weather is warm, sunny and humid.

Dargaville is the heart of the Kauri Coast, nestled amidst the hills northwest of Auckland and southwest of Whangarei. Founded during the kauri logging and gum digging boom, Dargaville is now a thriving farming and forestry community, and an ideal base from which to explore the great kauri forests, some of which have been standing for 1,500 years. Take advantage of the beautiful Dargaville weather by visiting the beach at Dargaville - it's one of the longest unbroken stretches of sand beach in New Zealand.

Kaitaia is the northernmost town in New Zealand, just over 100 kilometres south of Cape Reinga, the tip of the North Island. This busy farming centre is also home to vineyard owners and fruit growers, all relying on the warm Kaitaia weather and high rainfall for agricultural and horticultural success. Kaitaia is also a lifestyle haven for many artists and craftspeople, whose wares in wood, pottery, paint, glass, ceramics and greenstone can be seen at studios and galleries in Kaitaia and throughout the region.

Paihia is the jewel in the Bay of Islands' glistening crown. Its brilliant blue waters and beautiful bays are safe swimming places and excellent for water sports, diving and kayaking. Chances are the sun will be shining in Paihia, so take time to relax and enjoy sunny Paihia weather at the town's cafes, craft shops and superb sandy beaches.

Whangarei is Northland's main centre and a bustling, growing city with shops, galleries, museums, restaurants and cafes. Just north of Whangarei are the Poor Knights Islands, offering some of the best diving, snorkeling and fishing in the world, as well as Sandy Bay, a fantastic surf beach. Whangarei weather is hot, particularly in summer months when temperatures average 22°C to 26°C.
