General East Coast Weather Information

The East Coast district's Maori name, Tairawhiti, means 'the coast upon which the sun shines across the water,' a fitting name for one of the sunniest areas in New Zealand and the first to see the sun rise each day. East Coast weather is warm in summer and mild in winter, making the area ideal for exploring the outdoors: walking in gardens and reserves, fishing from land or boat, diving in coastal waters, or sampling some of the region's award winning wines on a vineyard trail.

Gisborne is the East Coast's main centre and has a warm, dry climate, ideally suited to the growing of grapes for wine making. As one of New Zealand's largest grape growing regions, Gisborne primarily produces Chardonnay grapes for unique, full-flavoured, award winning wines. Many vineyards and wineries are located within a short distance of the city and open their cellar doors to the public. Warm Gisborne weather in summer and mild temperatures year round ensure the region enjoys bumper crops of grapes and other fruits.
