General Central Plateau Weather Information
The Central Plateau, also known as the Volcanic Plateau, is made up of volcanic rocks and soil. Extending from Ruapehu and Lake Taupo in the south to Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty in the northeast, the region is known for its unique natural features. Mountains, deserts, lakes, rivers, active volcanoes, farm land and native forest are all part of this diverse region, making it a destination for travel in any season. In winter, ski or snowboard the slopes of Mount Ruapehu; in summer, visit the Tongariro National Park or jetboat down the Whanganui River.
Taumarunui
is the largest township in the district and is a rural service centre providing a focal point for the sawmilling, farming and horticultural industries in the area. For visitors, the town is a good base for exploring the area's gardens, playing a round of golf at one of the country's top 50 golf courses, or journeying into the Whanganui National Park. Taumarunui weather is ideal for snow sports in winter and water sports in summer months.
Taupo
is a truly unique destination. The geography of the area has been shaped by volcanic activity; Taupo's active geothermal history has created craters, mud pools, fumaroles, steam vents and Taupo's jewel, Lake Taupo. New Zealand's largest lake is 616 square kilometres and was created in 181AD. Taupo weather is temperate, yet cooler than other North Island locations, with year round rainbow and brown trout fishing popular in the lake and adjoining rivers.
