Where is New Zealand?
New Zealand is situated in the south-west corner of the Pacific Ocean, in the Southern Hemisphere. Two major islands – the North Island and the South Island – make up New Zealand, along with Stewart Island and several smaller islands. Our closest neighbour (and rival!) is Australia in the north-west. Further north are the Pacific nations of New Caledonia, Tonga and Fiji.

What's so special about New Zealand geography?
The coastline of New Zealand is 15,134 kilometres in length, with a land area of 268,680 square kilometres. From Kaitaia (the northern-most settlement at the top of the North Island) to Bluff (the southern-most town at the bottom of the South Island), you'll drive a distance of 1,600 kilometres. In between, there's no shortage of natural wonders. This is the place to be if you want to see:

• Mountains – a chain of mountains runs the length of the country, formed by the collision of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates
• Glaciers – the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers on the South Island’s West Coast are our most spectacular
• Volcanoes and geothermal activity – visit Whakatane to get to White Island, an active island volcano, or travel to Rotorua for mud pools, geysers and other geothermal attractions
• Lakes and rivers – Lake Taupo, our largest lake, was formed over 26,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption and is now a popular site for trout fishing in New Zealand
