More people play football, also known as soccer, than any other sport in the world. This is no exception for a diverse international city such as Auckland.  Get involved in the nation's fastest growing sport! Whether you are a raucous soccer fan or new to the city and want to meet Auckland footballers, NZS.com can help everyone - from new athletes to hardened fans - stay in touch with their favourite sport.

International

New Zealand put themselves on the football map in 1982 when they qualified for football's biggest sporting event, the FIFA's World Cup Finals.  Since then the soccer family has grown from The All Whites men's team to include The Football Ferns women's team, the FutsAll Whites futsal team and a number of international level youth teams.  In 2008 New Zealand played host to the debut of FIFA's U-17 Women's International Tournament with the finals in Auckland, the final game drawing over 16,000 people.  New Zealand is certainly looking forward to a bright future on the international soccer scene.

Professional

New Zealand's only fully professional soccer team is the Wellington Phoenix, with their home at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.  The team competes in the Australian A-League, and is followed by their fan base, the Yellow Fever. The Phoenix players also capitalise on the international club circuit, and you can occasionally catch members of the team in Auckland playing friendlies against such teams as the American LA Galaxy (with David Beckham on the roster).

National League

The governing body for national soccer is the NSFC or New Zealand Football Championship.  They manage the national youth development teams as well as eight teams in the semi-professional national league.  Auckland is home to the Auckland City FC who hosts home games at Kiwitea St in the summer.

Auckland Competitive Leagues

As an international city, a great number of people in Auckland are involved at a competitive level in the world's most popular sport.  The Auckland Football Federation has over 30 soccer club teams in the greater Auckland area for you to choose from.

Auckland Social Leagues

Over 25 parks host organised social soccer through the winter months, though several also hold games during the summer.

Futsal or Indoor Soccer

Originally from Brazilian origins, futsal is played with a small, slightly deflated ball for lots of fast touches on the ground.  At higher levels, you can expect a fantastic show of creative foot skills and individual stars. Indoor soccer is usually defined as an enclosed court where individuals play a slightly bouncy ball off the walls for continual play.  However, some indoor soccer sites feature lines and nets depending on their resources.

Although the rules differ in each venue, both futsal and indoor soccer feature less field players than outdoor soccer.

Check out your local indoor sporting venue for futsal availability. Most places that host a range of indoor sports such as netball and cricket will also include futsal or indoor soccer on their list.

Youth and Women's Leagues

Most international and competitive Auckland leagues offer a youth or women's division.  Many of the social and indoor leagues also offer co-ed soccer or women's futsal sessions.
