No summer is complete without summer music events to get your feet moving, and what better way to enjoy music than at one of the many New Zealand music festivals? Many music events feature a star-studded line-up to satisfy a variety of musical tastes.
- Big Day Out - 16 January, 2009
A one day indulgence in the best of the music world, this annual event happens in Auckland and features artists from every music genre: rock, alternative, dance and, of course, great New Zealand music. In 2009, BDO headline acts are Neil Young, The Living End, Sneaky Sound System, Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy and Hot Chip Book at Ticketek and selected music stores.
- Blues, Brews and BBQ’s - 8 January, 17 January and 7 February, 2009
A celebration of all that’s great about a Kiwi summer: cooking in the outdoors, enjoying a beer on a hot afternoon and listening to live music with a blues flavour. This year, events are held in Hastings, Blenheim and Mt Maunganui. Check online for booking details.

A New Year dance party set in the spectacular quartz and limestone landscape of Takaka Hill, in the Nelson Bays area. Enjoy live performances from over 130 acts, spanning a range of music genres and styles. Book your ticket at Cosmic Corner or selected music shops.

Held at the Mystery Creek Events Centre in Hamilton, Parachute is a Christian music event. This year's feature artists include Switchfoot, Israel and New Breed, Leigh Nash, Hillsong United, Red, Jonezetta and many more. Book online at iTicket.

A West Coast celebration of New Year's Eve featuring top New Zealand music from Shapeshifter, Salmonella Dub, The Little Bushman, Katchafire and Ladi 6, plus overseas DJ talent. Book your ticket at Cosmic Corner or selected music shops.

Held in Gisbourne, this is the place to be if you want to be the first to greet the New Year. The big acts this year are The Kooks, Franz Ferdinand, Public Enemy and Shihad. Book at Ticketmaster.
