DVDs are an affordable, readily available gift that you can pick up at the last minute (even on the way to Mum's on the day!).
You arrive at your local DVD store and are completely dumbfounded by the array of titles - and you cannot for the life of you, remember Mum's favourite movie. Maybe it had Diane Keaton in it? Be careful, you do not want to arrive home with The Godfather in hand.
DVD ideas for Mum:
The Holiday
Jude Law will make Mum swoon, Jack Black and Cameron Diaz will add a little hilarity and Kate Winslet will add a touch of sweetness. Set in Los Angeles and Surrey, England, this holiday comedy sees two lonely women swap houses in order to escape the men in their lives, only to fall head over heels again in their new abodes.
Shall We Dance
Richard Gere will bring back heartthrob memories from the 80s for Mum, and Susan Sarandon adds a touch of class in this oddball remake from the 1937 original. She'll love remising about her dancer dreams from when she was younger.
Becoming Jane
A sweet, fictionalised biopic of the life of iconic English writer Jane Austin. A great biographical portrait of the pre-fame life of the young writer and her romance with the Irishman who inspired her many love stories.
Pride & Prejudice
Since Mum is in a Jane Austin mood, why not team Becoming Jane with the Keira Knightly version of her most famous novel. Be careful here not to pick up the six-hour BBC interpretation!
Under the Tuscan Sun
If you have a mum who has always dreamed of venturing to the back roads of wine-country Italy, this one is for her. She will identify with girl-next-door Diane Lane, and will not stop dreaming of an alluring Italian stallion for days.
The Sound Of Music
Every mother loves to relive her childhood sing-along memories with Julie Andrews. The more she sees it, the more it will become ‘one of her favourite things'.
Calendar Girls
Older mums will love the tame naughtiness of this one. Helen Mirren is at her comedic best, and shines as the leader of a bid to create a nude calendar to raise money for her Church. Make sure Mum knows that it is just a movie, and any real life interpretations for her and her friends shall not be necessary!
Beaches
Another 80s gem which Mum (and only Mum) will love. She'll laugh, she'll cry and she'll come away reminiscing about her old best friends and their misspent youth. Team up with the soundtrack, there's no doubt that Wind Beneath My Wings will be one of her favourite songs.
Pretty Woman
Another Richard Gere number, but this one is not quite so family friendly. Julia Roberts catapulted into Hollywood fame with this unconventional romantic drama. While it does have hints of comedy, it is a darker film than popular culture leads it to be, as the screwball adventure of a prostitute is not what every mum wants to watch on a Sunday afternoon.
The King and I
If your mum is a vintage musical fan, pick up a copy of the 1956 live action classic, rather than the 1999 animated version. Old timers Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner have perfect chemistry in this exotic tale of a bourgeois teacher and a king 1860s Bangkok.
The Notebook
If you are after a DVD Mum might not have seen, this will become a new favourite. A heartwarming story of young love in the 1950s, this film stars little known faces, so the storyline is that much more effective and down to earth.
Serendipity
A sweet and genuine tale of love and chance, while the male protagonist John Cusack is not a typical heartthrob, Mum will relate to leading lady Kate Beckinsale and her engaging screen presence. A somewhat Shakespearean tale, filled with philosophical comedy, Mum's belief in fate with be reignited with this flick.
Thelma and Louise
The quintessential chick flick, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon make their iconic appearances as two gals on a search for strength. For an extra special mum, include the keys to a convertible with this one.
If the department stores have already closed, and all else has failed, pick up...
Grease
You cannot go wrong with Grease, as every mum will have had teenage dreams of a not-so-podgy John Travolta whisking her away in a muscle car. This film will get Mum (and probably the whole family) singing and dancing, and often you can even pick this one up at the petrol station if you really have no time for a Mother's Day gift.
