Latest fashion trends for women this winter

Being cold doesn't mean you need to look drab! Follow these fashion trends for winter and you'll be sure to sparkle like a snowflake this winter.

It's time to wrap up warm for autumn and winter, but there's no need to stop looking fabulous! Fashion trends this winter will let you retain a bit of glam - while also staying warm - and with versatility, there's something to suit all styles and body shapes. Check out these trends in fashion trends for the season:

The Waist

It's ‘in' in more ways than one: cinch your waist for a fashionable look this winter. Knee-length skirts with flattering, soft and feminine blouses are a great look when paired with a broad or narrow belt. A big belt makes a bold statement, while a narrow belt will create a delicately defined waistline. The beauty of the cinched look in women's winter fashion? Even if you don't have a well-defined waist, a belt will create the illusion of an hourglass shape. High waisted jeans and shorts (teamed with tights) are the look of the moment too, but make sure you feel comfortable before following this trend! For the best look with high-waisted pants, wear a non-bulky top that can easily be tucked in. A trendy little tee or polka-dot blouse will do the trick.

Hollywood Retro Glam

Continue the theme of the hourglass figure with Hollywood retro glam hair and make-up. This look has been hot for some time now, and this season is no exception. Think: Scarlett Johansson with peroxide blonde waves and bright red lippy. Combine wavy hair with bold plum or red lipstick, subtle eyeshadow and plenty of mascara. Jewellery, too, can be glammed up - try on your mother's pearls (borrowing is the best fashion bargain!) with a soft woollen sweater or cardigan for a sophisticated look this winter.

The Knees

Your knees can get an airing during winter months; cut-off pants are still a trend for winter 2008 fashion (remember when knee-length shorts were all the rage in winter a couple of seasons ago?). Pair your short pants/long shorts with ankle or knee-high boots and tights - patterned or plain. The best thing about this fashion trend is that it's so versatile: dress it down with cute ballet slip-ons or dress it up with heels.

Just-Below-The-Knees

The other fashionable spot is just below the knee - skirts' hemlines are dropping to this length for the winter months. Pencil skirts that finish just below the knee are flattering and can be worn to the office or out on the town - just adjust your accessories and swap a smart striped business shirt for a bright tee.

Big Cardigans and Sweaters

Chunky and textured are the keys to knitwear this winter - whether cardigans, turtlenecks or sweaters. For a snug outfit, try a long cable-knit ‘cardigan coat' (there are even some with cute knitted hoods!) teamed with bright tights and ankle boots. Knits are hot in charcoal grey, bold colours or classic black. Team with a belt to ensure you don't lose your shape.

Purple

This hue is making a comeback after its heyday in the 1980s, with knits, skirts, hats and other accessories in violet, lavender, mauve, plum and indigo. Wear purple with black or a contrasting colour, such as red or green, for a dramatic look this winter. The 1980's fashion trend lets you get away with these bold colours, so make the most of it!

Cute Hats

Keep your head warm this winter with one of the season's fashionable hats - berets and knitted caps are a top pick for winter fashion this year. They're a great accessory with any outfit and look especially good with baggy top, leggings and boots.

Leggy Leggings

Show off your pins with a pair of leggings - yes, they're still around! Great for keeping your legs warm, try textured, patterned or coloured tights. Wear with a pinafore, flouncy skirt, shorts, party dress or long cardigan. If leggings aren't your thing, try knee-high socks.

Trench Coats

The trench coat is a firm fixture in wardrobes for winter 2008 - so cinch your waist in one of these. Choose from colours including classic black, subtle caramel or bold red. A fashionable coat is worth a significant portion of your winter fashion budget, as this is the first piece of clothing the style police see when judging your fashion sense on a winter's day.

To keep yourself dry, as well as warm, get your hands on one of the bright little umbrellas around. A brollie in emerald green, fire engine red, hot pink or deep purple makes for a dramatic look on a gloomy, rainy day.

Carry On...

The patent leather bag will be around this winter - in glamorous black, bold purple or charcoal grey. Oversize and clutch bags remain amongst the top picks for fashion-conscious women this winter.

Walk Tall in Boots or Heels

A high heel is in vogue for the winter months, giving you a simmering look even on the coldest night. Watch for styles in patent leather (to match your bag), metallic hues (if full metallic is too much, you'll find them with gold or silver detail too) and bright colours (shoes in red, blue or green are great with dark outfits). For boots this winter, ankle boots are taking a leap up the popularity stakes - slouchy, simple, suede or leather. These look superb with tights and a skirt.
