New Zealand Modelling Agencies

Are you an aspiring or professional New Zealand model? Whether you're eyeing up a modelling career or already a successful model, read on for information on putting together a fabulous modelling portfolio.

Whether you're a professional model or an aspiring wannabe, you'll need to compile a modelling portfolio to show your potential talent and your skills as a model. Your portfolio will be your ticket to interviews and job offers. If you're unsure how to get a portfolio together to impress a New Zealand modelling agency, simply follow this simple guide:

Find a photography pro
Make a list of professional New Zealand fashion photographers who will be able to capture you at your best. Visit each photographer to get an idea of their experience in fashion photography, their personality and their style of photography. Ask for examples of their work, check whether their images will be digital or on film, and get a quote for their services. Some New Zealand modeling agencies may be able to recommend a photographer. Be aware that many photographers have a cancellation policy, meaning you will have to pay some or all of the fee if you cancel your photo shoot.

Get a beauty expert
Call on the services of an experienced New Zealand make-up artist, selecting one who has knowledge of the latest fashion hair styles and make-up. Shop around, asking for samples of their work and finding someone whose style you appreciate and who charges a reasonable rate. Your photographer may provide a make-up artist, but be sure to ask if this is included in the quoted fee. As with photographers, make-up artists usually have a cancellation policy.

Become a poser
You probably devour fashion magazines anyway, but make sure you take a good look through Vogue, Fashion Quarterly and other style sources before your photo shoot. These mags will give you priceless advice on poses. New Zealand modelling agencies will require a range of both head and body shots, so find a variety of poses that you like (and which flatter your shape) and practice them in front of a mirror. Sure, you might feel vain, but you'll get an idea of what works for you and how to hold your body in front of the camera.

Get the look
Show your versatility by demonstrating a number of 'looks' in your portfolio. You might want to try casual (jeans and a tee); summery (swimsuit or shift dress); high fashion (edgier clothing, make up and hair); bare (minimal make-up and a more natural look); or mod (think 1960's style with black and white, bob haircut and dramatic eyes). Get a number of outfits ready to take with you to your photo shoot and have them planned well in advance.

Be healthy
You'll need to be in tip top health to look your best in your modeling portfolio and for any visits you may make to modeling agencies. Care for your hair, skin and nails with a healthy diet, your own regular care and the services of a New Zealand beauty therapy professional (just prior to your photo shoot). While your diet should be healthy and your body toned, don't obsess over your weight; underweight models are not usually welcome at modeling agencies. Remember to steer clear of alcohol in the week prior to your shoot and get plenty of sleep. Models should present a picture of good health!

Enjoy your photo shoot
Be confident and take the initiative during your photo session, while also listening to the direction of the photographer. Nerves are normal before (and during) a shoot, even for professional models.

Put your best foot forward
Once your photographer has supplied a range of shots, pick your best. Get help from friends and family to choose at least ten photos which show a variety of looks and convey your personality. Less is more – ten fantastic shots are better than a bulging portfolio of mediocre photographs. Keep spare copies of your chosen photographs in a safe place, in case your portfolio is misplaced or damaged.

Present yourself well
Buy a portfolio in which to present your photographs. Most models use a hardcover book with plastic pocket pages in which photos can be slotted. Keep your modeling portfolio updated on a regular basis. Your portfolio will act as your modeling resume, and should contain photographs (showing a range of looks) and tearsheets (actual advertisements or articles where your photographs have been used).
