It’s always interesting watching search trends online in New Zealand as they mimic what’s going on overseas. As social networks like Facebook become more and more prevalent and the network of friends people have are spread around the globe, what’s going on in other countries (e.g. the United States and UK) affects what’s top-of-mind for us.

Over the last few days NZS.com has seen a good example where New Zealanders have been diligently searching online to find out when Father’s Day 2010 is in New Zealand.

The mild panic that sets in when you think that you may have missed Father’s Day completely is sparked from Father’s Day being at different times of the year in different countries.

For 61 countries, Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June (according to Wikipedia’s entry about Father’s Day) and it’s being talked about plenty across the world where Father’s Day is held.

For New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea it’s held on the first Sunday of September (5th of September in 2010) so if you’re in a mild panic mode that you may have missed it, don’t worry, there’s still two months to shop for that perfect pair of socks!

Investigating a search trend in any one day almost always turns up something unexpected.

After looking through the latest top searches on NZS.com I came across a number of searches for the “new zealand flag meaning” and similar terms.

Sounds like there’s a school project going on with students researching the meaning of the New Zealand flag on the Internet?

If you’re looking for the New Zealand flag meaning, you can have a look at our own Flags Category for clues, or perhaps the history of the NZ flag from the Ministry of Culture & Heritage will provide a helpful resource.

For interest, you may want to be careful how you display the New Zealand flag as the Flags, Emblems and Names Protection Act 1981 defines how the flag can be used, and allows for prosecution on misuse!

Good luck with the research!
