It’s always interesting watching search trends online in New Zealand as they mimic what’s going on overseas. As social networks like Facebook become more and more prevalent and the network of friends people have are spread around the globe, what’s going on in other countries (e.g. the United States and UK) affects what’s top-of-mind for us.

Over the last few days NZS.com has seen a good example where New Zealanders have been diligently searching online to find out when Father’s Day 2010 is in New Zealand.

The mild panic that sets in when you think that you may have missed Father’s Day completely is sparked from Father’s Day being at different times of the year in different countries.

For 61 countries, Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June (according to Wikipedia’s entry about Father’s Day) and it’s being talked about plenty across the world where Father’s Day is held.

For New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea it’s held on the first Sunday of September (5th of September in 2010) so if you’re in a mild panic mode that you may have missed it, don’t worry, there’s still two months to shop for that perfect pair of socks!

In many countries around the world, May Day is also “International Worker’s Day” or “Labour Day”.

Early mentions to May Day celebrations show references to the Floralia festival – a celebration of Flora, the Roman Goddess of flowers. This 1st May festival was celebrated by dancing, drinking and the presentation and giving of flowers. Perhaps this Saturday is a good excuse to look for online florists?

In Europe it is still recognised and celebrated by dancing around the Maypole and the crowning of the Queen of May. One tradition that has now faded is the giving of baskets of flowers, known as May baskets.

May Day is not so well known in New Zealand and has little to do with our own Labour Day although if you’re lucky, you may still find some schools that perform traditional Maypole dancing. If you happen to find one or are involved with the organisation of Maypole dancing in New Zealand, feel free to post a comment and let us know.

It’s official – Christmas Day is just five weeks away! For those of you who still believe, that means Santa will be shimmying down your NZ Christmas chimney in only 35 sleeps – but fret not if you’re feeling a little disorganised.

Whether you’ve had your Christmas shopping sorted for months or you’re still deciding who in your family will be hosting the typical NZ Christmas dinner this year, NZS.com has you covered with a whole host of great Christmas ideas and tips to help you save money at Christmas and make the most of the holiday season.

The Christmas holidays may still be some weeks away, but office Christmas parties are already in full swing, which may mean participating in a little “secret Santa” shopping at the last minute.

If hitting the mall and finding some great Christmas gifts and the best toys for Christmas is your next priority, consider doing some of your shopping online to reduce your stress and help you avoid impulse purchases.

As for the silly season and Christmas Day traditions, why not get in to the spirit of things by sending out real Christmas cards (not emails), or by baking up a storm with some delicious Christmas recipes? And if you’ll be celebrating a Christian Christmas with the family this year, you could even get together with members of your church to sing some traditional Christmas carols at a local rest home to spread some holiday cheer.

Of course, the Twelve Days of Christmas doesn’t start for another couple of weeks so you’ve still got a little time up your sleeve to hang your Christmas pictures and sort your Christmas trees and decorations.

Good luck with your NZ Christmas planning! Be sure to keep checking NZS.com as more Christmas articles, hints and planning ideas are added over the following weeks.
