The Super Rugby games are in full swing for 2011. Known last year as the Super 14, the Super Rugby has experienced a number of name changes throughout the year due simply to changes in the number of teams that were involved with the tournament.

You can find Super Rugby results that are regularly updated each week within our articles section, as well as the Super Rugby standings.

With the Melbourne Rebels joining for this year’s games and making a total of 15 teams, the decision was made to drop the number from the title and simply call the games the more future-proof Super Rugby.

There are now an even five teams from each of the countries involved; Australia, South Africa and, of course, New Zealand, with matches held at venues in all three countries.

The Christchurch earthquake has disrupted the games to some extent with matches that were to be played at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium (previously Jade Stadium) canceled due to the earthquake. The stadium has sustained some damage and is to be properly assessed to determine the amount of repairs required in preparation for the world cup.

For those looking for information on last year’s games, you can view the Super 14 results and the Super 14 standings from 2010.

With the All White’s recent dramatic results in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it’s not surprising that searches for the associated terms have seen an equally dramatic increase since New Zealand’s qualifying matches. Now that the All Whites are no longer playing since their ill-fated game against Paraguay on June 24th, it will be interesting to see how much of the traffic drops off.

Searches for ‘soccer’ in green and ‘football’ in blue over the past 3 months.

What’s also interesting is how New Zealand’s new found interest in football as a whole may change the terminology that we use to describe the sport. For many years, New Zealand has adopted the more Americanised title of ‘soccer’ unlike Europe’s ‘football’. The chart above shows that searches for soccer have closely mirrored searches for football but at a fairly consistently lower level. Football may be higher due to the confusion between rugby and soccer. Until, that is, the FIFA World Cup where ‘soccer’ slightly overtook ‘football’. Fairly surprising as the tournament is marketed as the ‘Football’ World Cup.

It’s possible that this has occurred because many New Zealanders associate the term ‘football’ with the more popular sport of rugby. Therefore, when people are searching for information on the FIFA World Cup, they search specifically for soccer as they don’t want to see results returned for rugby.

Following this, the real question is … which team do you support now that the All Whites are heading home?

Now that we’ve passed the winter solstice, the days will get longer and longer on the way towards summer. With that in mind, now’s the time to make the most of the New Zealand ski fields before the snow melts.

If you’re from overseas and planning a New Zealand holiday, don’t forget to include a visit to one of our many fine ski resorts as part of your travels around the country. If you’re at the bottom of the South Island, take a trip to Cardrona, Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or Treble Cone. Closer to the centre of the South Island? Add a visit to Mount Hutt’s ski resort to your road trip through the Southern Alps. If you’re on the North Island, make sure you stop by Mount Ruapehu in one of the world’s most active geothermal regions.

Whatever you do, make sure you don’t set off without the right equipment! Take a look in the NZS.com directory for skiing and snowboarding supplies and even more ski resorts.
